We would like to invite you to the International Summer School on the "Role of Physics in Future Applications: from Nanotechnology to Macroelectronics" held in the Czech Republic from 10th to 15th June 2002. The school is a continuation of the traditional and highly successful series of the schools devoted to physics of thin films and surfaces held every three years in the Czech Republic.
Advances in physics of thin films and surfaces have led to a spectacular success of microelectronics. With the dimensions of devices shrinking to nanometer size, strange and exciting quantum phenomena are waiting to be used in future applications. At the same time, thin film technologies are becoming a basis of truly macroscopic devices: modern LCDs are in fact huge chips and once the thin film photovoltaic panels become widely used for solar energy utilization, their total size will soon reach square kilometres.
Invited speakers from leading world laboratories will present the latest progress in the related science and technology fields. The school is intended for young people, mainly doctoral students and young research workers from both academia and companies.

The school usually draws an audience of about 100 participants, mostly from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but also from Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland and other European countries.
Traditionally, the school will take place in the relaxing environment of a a small recreation resort hidden in the forests at the Czech-Moravian highlands, half way between Prague and Brno. The resort offers a relaxing environment good not only for science but also for plenty of other activities. We seem to attract people who love the beautiful nature of the highland forests, who are good at singing at the bonfire, play a volleyball tournament etc. In fact, since the last summer school we have a feeling that the school is becoming self-organized and this makes the life of the organizers much easier.
We are looking forward to see you in Tri Studne.
